Johnston Fire Station 1 The Town of Johnston had not built a new fire station in over 40 years. Fire Station #1's architecture is a simple, utilitarian design providing an efficient and economical solution to the project's program and budget. The Station is built on a 3-acre urban site. The town zoning set backs drove the building design while responding to the requirements of the program. The design separates emergency areas from the support and sleeping quarters. The organization of the space was critical to provide direct ascension from both the living and sleeping quarters to the engine room. The inspiring interior colors provide warmth and a sense of place for the firefighters. Traditional architecture imagery is expressed with a timeless classical appeal, embracing the bordering residential neighborhoods. The multiple hip roofs provide the station with scale and context, seamlessly melding the building into the neighboring fabric. The Station includes: Apparatus bay, maintenance workshops, a workout room, turnout rear storage, decon area, shared and officer's quarters, day room, command center, & kitchen with eating area. (7,500 square feet)
