Johnston Fire Station 4 Fire Station #4 replaces an inadequately and outdated facility with trailers used as living quarters. The 1.9 acre urban site was selected because of its adjacency to the existing headquarters and a partnership with DEM to allow access to a wild life reserve. This shared site provided convenient parking for the fire fighter while also meeting the needs of the partnership by providing access and parking to a wild life reserves. The architecture is a simple utilitarian design providing an efficient and economical solution to the program. The building’s imagery is a timeless expression of contemporary architecture. The exterior is constructed with split-faced integral colored concrete block providing low maintenance with vertical sections of a glazed curtain wall expressing the simple elements of the building while creating visual interest. The design separates the emergency areas from the support and sleeping quarters. The building design incorporates two apparatus bays, a maintenance workshop, a training room with views to the apparatus bay, turnout gear, decontamination area, shared sleeping quarters and officer’s quarters, a day room, command centers and kitchen/eating area. A covered patio also provides a private landscaped exterior eating area. The inspiring interior colors provide warmth and a sense of place for the fire fighters.
